Television and radio personality Sam Spear passed away recently, and he will be dearly missed.
We were fortunate to have interviewed him for Bay Crossings some time ago, and he explained his take on why the track continues to hold a special place in Bay Area sports history:
“Unlike baseball or football, a gentleman can take a lady here for a quiet afternoon of fun and entertainment. During the race, it’s non-stop excitement, but then they have another break to enjoy the fine dining, live music and outstanding views.”
Golden Gate Fields’ media agent, Matt Dinerman sent us this tribute:
A close friend and confidant of legendary San Francisco native Joe DiMaggio, Spear often drove “Joe D.” to and from both Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields and ensured he was well taken care of throughout many race days in both the press box and Turf Club.
