In this exclusive interview, she shares her views on a variety of topical issues.
Cultural Currents: As a resident of Northern California, how does living in the region shape your art?
Alison Ewing: Northern California is leading the effort in diversity and inclusion in theater and it’s wonderful to be a part of Bay Area artists who are willing to grow and expand. It makes the work we do here in our tight knit community textured and nuanced and I’m lucky to be a part of that!
CC: What impact has the pandemic had on your life as a performer? Any positive consequences?
Ewing: The pandemic has made me really focus on what’s important, and has made me slow down and appreciate that we are even back to do live theatre at all. I believe it has made me appreciate the importance of live theatre in a world where home-viewing and isolation has taken over. We are back, rehearsing safely in masks, and still able to make the magic happen with resilience. That’s a really incredible thing.
CC: What are the major challenges of your role in “Night Music”?
Ewing: I”m working on the balance with Desirees character. She is pulled by her career, her family, and her want of a man who is in a different place than she is. She must have a subtle comic timing but a realness in the serious moments.
